In Situ [Latin: in Place]

In Situ is a fieldwork project that explores the construction of identity by personal experience through an internal/external interface. In our exploration, over the course of one year, Benjamin Johnsen and Jessica Mills will focus on the notion of place making. Place making, for this project, will be defined as the co-authoring interface of the nature (exterior space)/culture (internal space) complex in which we form connections between the two spaces to formulate place. As we go about our daily lives we will be in constant search, documenting the finding of place where it is experienced and experience its self. In understanding how we experience place and form identity, we hope to allow the viewers to open themselves to a different experiential vantage point. Ultimately, the discourse such a shift creates begins to explore the disconnection of humans from the natural world, collective human consciousness, and the human condition.

In Situ creates a connection with its audience through the faceless identity of each artists with their stand-in body-their feet. The journey of the audience will be reflective of that of the artists. Through presentation the audience will be encouraged to meander, treasure hunt, discover in similar ways to the artists. The experience of In Situ is inviting and democratic.

In addition to being a gallery show, In Situ will be presented in book form with writings by William Fox and Katie Wudel
